‘Kano Government Reinstate Deposed Emir Sanusi’
The minority leader of the Kano State House of Assembly, Abdul Madari, has alleged that the New Nigeria Peoples Party-led government of Kano State is planning to reinstate Lamido Sanusi as Emir of Kano.
Madari, who was speaking against the moves by NNPP lawmakers to amend Kano State Emirates Council law, told BBC Hausa that 12 members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the House were not opposed to the amendment, provided none of the five Emirates would be dissolved and the Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, would not be deposed and replaced with Sanusi.
He alleged that the ruling party had perfected its plan to also dissolve Bichi emirate, adding though the NNPP lawmakers in the Assembly have the numbers to effect the amendment, the opposition members would ventilate their disagreement.
Meanwhile, a principal officer of the Kano State House of Assembly, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that some lawmakers have been advocating for the dissolution of the Kano emirates since the early days of the Abba Kabir Yusuf administration.
The officer emphasized that nothing can prevent the Assembly from amending the Kano emirate law.
On Wednesday, the Kano State Emirates Council (Amendment Number 2) Law 2024 (1445AH), sponsored by Majority Leader Lawan Hussaini Chediyar Yan Gurasa of Dala Constituency, passed its first reading.
The law originally established five new emirates and was first signed by former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje on December 5, 2019. Subsequent amendments were made on October 14, 2020, and April 11, 2023.
Commenting on the latest developments, an unnamed lawmaker expressed determination to proceed with the amendment.
“We were ready for this a long time ago, and only God can stop this amendment. We intended to replace all these emirs 20 days after this administration was inaugurated, but here we are. So tomorrow (Thursday), there will be a special session of the Assembly to consider and pass the amendment,” he told Daily Trust.
