President Muhammadu Buhari has indicated his resolve to lift the suspension placed on Twitter but said the social media giant must have to fulfil certain requirements before it operates again in the country.
The federal government had suspended Twitter on 5 June 2021 after the platform removed a post from the former military ruler that threatened to speak to secessionists in the language they would understand.

On Friday morning, in his October 1 independence anniversary speech, President Buhari while acknowledging that Twitter, as well as other social media platforms, is a very useful platform that has enabled millions of Nigerians to connect with loved ones, promote their businesses, socialise, and access news and other information, however, noted that recent events have shown that the platform is not just a platform for information dissemination.
He said some users have misused Twitter “to organise, coordinate, and execute criminal activities, propagate fake news, and promote ethnic and religious sentiments”.
President Buhari said that was the reason his administration suspended the operations of Twitter in Nigeria to allow the Government to put measures in place to address these challenges.
He said a committee set up for that purpose, along with its Technical Team, has engaged with Twitter and have addressed a number of key issues.
“These are National Security and Cohesion; Registration, Physical presence and Representation; Fair Taxation; Dispute Resolution; and Local Content,” he said.
“Following the extensive engagements, the issues are being addressed and I have directed that the suspension be lifted but only if the conditions are met to allow our citizens continue the use of the platform for business and positive engagements.”
“As a country, we are committed to ensuring that digital companies use their platform to enhance the lives of our citizens, respect Nigeria’s sovereignty, cultural values and promote online safety,” the president added.
