Following the passing of Dr Obadiah Mailafia, a former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), veteran journalist and businessman Dele Momodu has shared a private message the 64-year-old sent to him nine days ago.
It appears the two men had not met each other one on one, according to the content of the message that was shared on Twitter Sunday by Mr Momodu.
The late Mailafia, who served as the apex bank’s deputy governor between 2005 and 2007, got the journalist’s contact from one Sola Adejumobi at Ibadan, Oyo state.
Dr Mailafia who in 2019 joined the presidential race under the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) told Mr Momodu in the message that he liked his writing style and patriotism.
The economist and columnist wrote, on 10 September: “Ekaale Sir. Our mutual friend Sola Adejumobi at Ibadan gave me your number. I like your writing and your style and patriotism. Blessings. Obadiah Mailafia.”
Mr Momodu who only got to see the message a week later said, “I was so touched by his simplicity and humility despite his towering achievements”.
The CEO and publisher of Ovation International said: “May his patriotic soul Rest In Peace”.
He said: “Is this how cheap this life is, my God!! DR OBADIAH MAILAFIA had sent me this message which I saw about a week later… We’ve never met but had mutual respect for each other. I’m glad we spoke just days ago.”
