…Extends President Tinubu’s appreciation as Nigerian emerges LCBC Executive Scribe

Nigeria remains committed to the ideals of regional co-existence and cooperation, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu has reaffirmed.

The minister also stated that the mandate of the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) was a vital regional platform for environmental sustainability, food security, peace and collective economic stability.

A statement by the minister’s Special Assistant on Communication and New Media, Magnus Eze said these were the highlights of her remarks at the 71st session of the Council of Ministers of the Lake Chad Basin Commission holding in N’Djamena, Republic of Chad, from 3rd-6th March 2026.

According to the minister, the Lake Chad Basin is not only a shared natural resource but also a lifeline for over 40 million people across Member States.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu acknowledged the fact that the security situation in the Lake Chad Basin remained a critical concern.

She expressed Nigeria’s commendation for the continued efforts of the Multinational Joint Task Force ( MNJTF) and the sustained collaboration among Member States in combating terrorism and violent extremism in the region.

However, the minister decried the impact of climate change on the Lake Chad, noting the alarming shrinkage qhich she said was one of the most pressing environmental challenges confronting the region.

The minister advocated for scientifically grounded solutions aimed at revitalizing the lake and sustaining the livelihoods of millions who depended on it.

She further expressed the appreciation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Government and the people of Nigeria for the endorsement of Nigeria’s candidate, Ambassador Ibrahim Babani as the new Executive Secretary of the Commission for a four year term.

She described Babani as a seasoned diplomat and professional with strong expertise in water resources management, security and regional cooperation.

Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation Prof. Joseph Utsev, and the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Emanso Umobong among others, were on the Nigerian delegation.
