Imo Election: Crisis Looms As INEC Ban Journalists From Recording, Using Cameras
The Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) National Commissioner representing South East, Kenneth Ukeagu, on Tuesday, barred journalists from covering the ongoing stakeholders meeting organised by the electoral body ahead of the November 11 governorship election in the state.
Ukeagu, represented the INEC’s National Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, ordered journalists not to use their cameras and other gadgets during the interactive session.
However, some members of the opposition parties kicked against the directive.
For instance, the deputy governorship candidates for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP), Jones Onyereri and Tony Nwulu respectively described it as a sign that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) was planning to use the electoral body to rig the election on Saturday.
Soon after their objections, the session became rowdy and some members of the APC angrily charged towards the members of the opposition.
Some traditional rulers and the Resident Electoral Commissioners posted to the state for the election fled the hall as the atmosphere became charged and the political rivals hurled insults at one another.
