COAS Directs NASME To Sustain Rigorous, Mission-oriented Training For Enhanced Combat Effectiveness

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has charged the Nigerian Army School of Military Engineering (NASME) to sustain rigorous, mission-oriented training in order to produce highly competent engineers capable of delivering effective combat support across theatres of operation.

The COAS gave the directive on Wednesday, 4 March 2026, during his maiden operational visit to Headquarters NASME, Makurdi. He stressed the strategic importance of the institution in developing the technical expertise and operational proficiency required to meet the evolving demands of modern warfare.

He noted that NASME remains a critical pillar in generating the skilled manpower necessary for engineering tasks across formations and units of the Nigerian Army. The Army Chief emphasized that training must be realistic, practical and aligned with contemporary operational realities to ensure quality output and enhanced combat effectiveness.

In line with his command philosophy, the COAS reaffirmed his commitment to improving the welfare, accommodation and overall living conditions of personnel within NASME Barracks, stressing that troop welfare remains central to operational efficiency and morale.

Earlier, the Commandant NASME, Major General Idongesit Essien Ekpenyong, expressed appreciation to the COAS for his consistent support to the institution. He briefed the Army Chief on ongoing training activities, operational commitments and key challenges affecting infrastructure and welfare within the barracks.

Highlights of the visit included an operational briefing, presentation of a commemorative memento and group photographs.
