SAFA President Arrested On Fraud Charges
South African Football Association (SAFA) president Danny Jordaan has been arrested over allegations of fraud involving R1.3 million, (N52 million) reportedly misused for personal expenses, News24 reports.
Jordaan, SAFA chief financial officer Gronie Hluyo, and journalist-turned-businessman Trevor Neethling are expected to appear in the Specialised Commercial Crime Court in Palm Ridge on Wednesday.
Jordaan stated that his arrest took place at home, saying, “I did not hand myself over, police came to my house and brought me to this court.”
Jordaan previously sought an interdict from the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg to prevent his arrest, which was scheduled to be heard on Thursday.
However, the arrest has since been carried out.
The Hawks confirmed that the arrests were based on warrants issued earlier, noting that Jordaan allegedly misappropriated SAFA resources between 2014 and 2018.
According to Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale, Jordaan is accused of using funds to hire a private security firm and a public relations company without the board’s consent.
“The president is also reported to have violated SAFA statutes, thus prejudicing SAFA an actual loss of R1.3 million,” Mogale previously remarked.
During a raid on SAFA’s Nasrec office in Johannesburg in March, the Hawks confiscated electronic devices and documents, including a laptop, external hard drives, a USB, and other records.
